Backhoes
A backhoe dredger is based on the giant land-based backhoe excavator that is mounted at one end of a spud-rigged pontoon. Its main advantage is its ability to dredge a wide range of materials, including debris and soft, weathered or fractured rocks.

Fallpipe Vessels
A fallpipe vessel drops stone into position using a fallpipe. The stone is pushed into the fallpipe on board the ship as the ship sails over the place where the stone has to be placed. The end of the fallpipe is only a few meters over the destination and it is positioned precisely using a remote-controlled positioning system.
